This piece is a twelve-panel, world wall map. It was created by using information from the travels of both Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci, A book was written to accompany the map, much of which is written in Latin. The map contains the first recorded usage of the word “America” in honor of Amerigo Vespucci.

Martin Waldseemüller (1470-1520) studied at the University of Freiburg, was a German cartographer (mapmaker), and died without a will or heir.

MUSIC APPRECIATION

Stravinsky wrote The Firebird both as a ballet and an orchestral suite. “The Infernal Dance of King Katschei” is the fifth movement of the suite. This particular part of the ballet has sounds full of anger and fury. The featured instruments in this piece are loud instruments, both brass and percussion.

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was a Russian-born composer whose work had a revolutionary impact on musical thought and sensibility just before and after World War I, and whose compositions remained a touchstone of modernism for much of his long working life. He was honoured with the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal in 1954 and the Wihuri Sibelius Prize in 1963. 4
